Aluminium and steel packaging: new production and market trends

Aluminium and steel packaging: new production and market trends

In recent years, the steel and aluminium packaging sector has been going through a period of profound transformation, driven by technological innovation, environmental sustainability and changes in consumer behaviour.

In a market that rewards environmentally conscious brands, these materials, particularly known for their durability and recyclability, are experiencing an increase in popularity, also because they are perceived by consumers as more elegant and sophisticated and, therefore, very suitable for premium cosmetic or food products.

So what are the trends that will revolutionise the industry?

Reducing the carbon footprint

In recent years, many researchers have been trying to bring decarbonised cans on the market through a new hydrogen refining technique that has a lower energy footprint. The patent, owned by the Ball Corporation, could contribute significantly to reducing carbon emissions worldwide.

In addition, work is being done on decarbonised steel cans, produced through a hydrogen refining process that has a lower energy impact.

Increasing percentages of recycled steel and aluminium

For companies in the aluminium and steel packaging sector, the main challenge in the coming years will be to reduce waste and increase the percentage of material that is actually recycled.

The ultimate goal is to achieve a circular economy, in which 100 per cent of the raw material is continuously reused for the production of new packaging.

Steel and aluminium refillable packaging

A trend that is now increasingly common in some sectors, particularly the beauty and personal care one, is that of refillable packaging. In recent years many companies have, in fact, been experimenting with solutions to provide the same product, but in refillable format, so as to avoid waste and thus optimize a resource that is still serving its purpose.

This trend certainly has a positive return not only for environmental sustainability, but also for the image of the brands that are implementing these solutions. Indeed, consumers are increasingly aware of social and environmental issues and often prefer products with sustainable packaging.

Increased customisation of aluminium packaging

In recent years, there has been an increasing trend in the usage of coatings or prints to decorate aluminium or steel packaging.

Many companies are experimenting with the use of protective coatings and paints to attract the end consumer at the time of purchase, but also to differentiate themselves from their competitors.

This trend is having a positive impact on the market, which has seen an overall increase in demand for this type of packaging.

The challenges of the aluminium packaging market

Although these trends are having a very positive impact on the market, they bring with them a number of challenges that companies are often not ready to face:

  • production and raw material costs that are often higher than for materials such as plastic or cardboard;
  • extremely stringent safety regulations for metal materials intended for contact with food or cosmetics. Here, constant monitoring of packaging and regulations is necessary so as not to incur in penalties, risks or production stoppages;
  • the need to adapt packaging for sensitive products through the inclusion of specific internal coatings.

Despite these challenges, the future of the aluminium and steel packaging market looks promising, especially given the boost these materials have received following the approval of the PPWR (we talked about it here).
